We cannot see the future, of course, but there are a number of technological innovations that are relevant to gaming, that are also fairly easy to see coming. Currently, access to gaming involves some sort of access to computing technology, and access to gaming that can earn money involves access to a shared, persistent, physical computing environment, specifically a virtual world . The technology supporting virtual worlds is advancing so quickly that it would be foolish to describe the next generation in any detail. Suffice it to say that there are large, lucrative industries working energetically on different dimensions of the environment that virtual worlds thrive in. These industries produce three items of interest, namely, connections, interface and content. Developments in connections include the internet and, increasingly, wireless communications. Development of interfaces includes voice command, head-up displays and body motion detection (computer-controlling gloves, gaze readers). Developments in content include the supply side of the market for games, where annual revenues have grown beyond Hollywood box office revenues. All three industries are expanding at a rapid rate. Whatever emotional experiences people seek, it may become possible, in the near future, to effortlessly connect to a virtual world that provides that experience at fairly low cost. Kurzweil argues that the explosion of computing power alone may be sufficient to change the daily course of life. Since these developments all involve networks, they may seem to suggest a monopolistic market structure. If economic life online involves getting your email and hanging around with friends, there will be positive externalities with respect to the sheer size of the virtual world one visits. If I spend my time on Rubi-Ka, while you spend your time in Albion, we cannot talk to one another, and we cannot do things together. Thus, our time in virtual worlds is more valuable if everyone we know is in the same world. Moreover, if two worlds compete and one has more players than another, wouldn’t everyone have an incentive to join the larger world, so as to enjoy the larger network of society, communication and entertainment that it affords? Might such network externalities lead to a domination of this market by one player?For example,some network games such as lotro gold,runescape gold,guild wars gold etc. There are reasons to expect, however, that this market is not likely to be monopolized. First, there seems to be a great diversity of tastes for the different features of a world. Mr. Bird may want to be on Pluto, while Mr. Castronova prefers medieval Britain. One of the major attractions of life mediated by avatars is the anonymity it affords, and anonymity requires a person to have exit options: other worlds to escape to if one’s reputation in this one gets unpleasant. Perhaps a savvy game developer could make a world so large and varied as to provide the essential minimum level of entertainment and anonymity to a sufficiently large number of people, so that membership in that one world becomes optimal for all. This seems unlikely, however, given that there is a marginal cost to creating and maintaining game content. Moreover, there are no economies of scale on the supply side to match the increasing returns on the demand side (Liebowitz and Margolis, 1994). Production of game content and its maintenance are both labour-intensive activities. One could perhaps increase production of content by allowing other producers (say, by opening game code to the public), but continued control of the world being created would be problematic. On the whole, it seems very unlikely that one developer could produce a world big enough to monopolize the market. A second reason involves congestion. Virtual worlds are virtual because they are online, but they are worlds because there is some physicality to them. Avatars take up space. If a world has a certain amount of entertaining content in it, that content will almost always be subject to some kind of congestion effect. The cool monsters are in the Dungeon of Befallen, but if tens of thousands of us go there to hunt them, none of us will have a good time. Sometimes the only way to reduce congestion is to add content, but this, again, is labour intensive. There will also be congestion effects related to connection speeds and bandwidth. A third reason that the market will probably not be dominated by a few companies can be found in the many competitive strategies that are available even now, but have not yet been exploited by new entrants. For example, the current set of developers have managed to impose huge switching costs on players by structuring gameplay around the time-intensive development of avatar capital. A player starts the game with a weak avatar, but gameplay gives the avatar ever-increasing powers. As power increases, the avatar is able to take more advantage of the game world, to travel farther, do more things, see more people. A person with a high-level avatar then faces a high hurdle in switching games, because in the new game he will start out poor, defenceless and alone again. This situation definitely locks in the game’s player base, but it is also open to defeat by any number of schemes to reduce the switching costs. Surprisingly, no competitor to a current game has offered new players the opportunity to start their avatars at a higher level of wealth and ability if they can provide evidence of a high level avatar in another game. On the other hand, two games (Ultima Online and Dark Ages of Camelot) now offer methods to effectively start out ahead: in Ultima, you can directly buy your levels; in Camelot, you can start a new avatar at level 20 if you have already gotten one to level 50. These strategies help companies discourage the buying and selling of avatars outside the game, perhaps at a cost to the atmosphere within the world. In sum, what appear to be strong lock-ins and switching costs in the game market today may not be as strong as they seem; when savvy competitors appear, the player bases will generally be at risk. For example,some network games such as lotro gold,runescape gold,guild wars gold etc. A final argument against a monopolization tendency comes from the nature of the content itself. Games are art, for the most part, and markets for artistic output exhibit a great deal of churn due to herding effects and the star phenomenon (MacDonald, 1988). If a company designs a better game, it will attract players. And while it is true that development costs can be significant, it will always be possible to produce a fun virtual world for a tiny amount of money and then scale it up as it becomes more popular.Whatever network externalities, supply-side returns to scale, and barriers to entry may exist in the market for virtual worlds, they seem insufficient to produce domination by a single company. The distribution of populations in virtual worlds is perhaps less like a natural monopoly market than a club goods market. Populations will sort according to the services, ambience, and fees of the various worlds. Virtual worlds will compete, as clubs do, but their size will be limited by congestion effects and by the marginal cost of increasing the scale of the world. This analysis allows a tentative answer to the first question of the study: in the medium-term future, the online multiplayer gaming market will probably consist of a number of large, densely populated worlds, with varying degrees of portability between them. The worlds will generate large revenue streams and will occupy many hours of human time, some of it considered play, some of it considered work. The hours that people devote to games will result in the accumulation of stocks of digital capital goods. These objects will have considerable economic value. Given the expected growth in connectivity, interface technologies and content, there is reason to believe that this digital capital stock may eventually become quite large. These considerations then lead to the next set of questions: If virtual worlds do become more important, how will this affect the real Earth economy?

Writing a really good report can be important to our career, and because of this, it is something we should take very seriously. After all, a written report is a permanent record. It is a record not only of our writing skills, but also of our clarity of thought, our ability to analyse evidence, our problem solving skills and our ability to successfully achieve the purpose for which the report was commissioned. What is a Report? “A report is a statement of the results of an investigation or of any matter on which definite information is required.” (Oxford English Dictionary) A report is not a narrative or an essay. We are not telling a story, or giving a subjective description. Equally, it is not a series of blunt bullet points. A report is a well written statement of evidence, with conclusions and, perhaps, recommendations. It is an analysis of the data of the investigation, written in an objective, logical and factual way. A report has a purpose and, to be effective, that purpose must be achieved. The people reading this report, the audience, must be able to find the required information, understand it and follow the logical flow of the argument from beginning to end. Writing a really effective report that will succeed it this way requires 1) a plan and 2) a structure. Plan before you Write As with most things in life, it is better to spend more time planning the report than writing it. Time spent planning will make even the most complex report much easier to write, and will lead to a much better quality and more effective end product. Step one is to clarify your purpose, to have a very clear focus on your objectives. The ‘Purpose Triangle’ will help you tease out what exactly you are producing. Think of an equal sided triangle with the word ‘purpose’ in the middle. The 3 sides of the triangle are the aspects we work on to tease out our purpose. They are overlapping elements, and working on all 3 separately will help you clarify your thinking. The 3 sides are - 1. Topic & Objective 2. Audience 3. Use Side 1 - Topic & Objective Write down the answers to the following questions. If you don’t know the answers, ask someone! What exactly is the Topic? Who has asked for this report? What is the scope of your report? What aspects of the topic are you to cover? What are the limits of the report? What are you not to address? What is deadline? What report size is required? The next important issue to teas out is what exactly is the objective? Why am I writing this report? Is it to give information, to evaluate, to persuade or what? Side 2 - Audience Who are you writing for? You are writing for an audience - not for yourself. Spend time thinking about your audience. You want them to understand and accept your report. You want them to be positively impressed with your efforts. Remember that only 20% of the population are like you - 20% think like you, think the same things are logical and obvious like you. The other 80% are different. You may like lots of facts and figures, they may see this as waffle and want to see the bottom line. You may like just the higher level points - they may want the detail. Do some research on your audience and pitch your points, flow and language style to suit them. Side 3 - the Use This question will also help us determine the level of detail and approach in our report. Do not assume that the person commissioning the report simply wants to read the information. Is this report to be used to take action, to be presented to someone outside the organisation, to be used in a court case etc.? Knowing what exactly your report will be used for will influence how you write it. Tease out all the sides of the Purpose Triangle using the questions above. When you have finished, you should be able to write down a very sharp purpose statement in one short paragraph. Report Structure A report has a definite structure. It is arranged in a way that the reader can easily find the information he or she requires. A structure also makes it easier for the writer, to arrange our thoughts in a logical flow and to write a readable report. In its simplest form, a report will consist of a beginning, a middle and an end. The beginning, the Introduction, sets the scene by informing the reader what the report is all about and what it intends to achieve. The middle section, the Findings, is the most important part of the document where the details of the findings are delivered, and the arguments developed. The findings section has a logical structure, is written in clear language, and is organised into appropriate headings and sub-headings. This clarifies the report’s aim and ensures the reader’s interest is maintained. The end must follow on naturally from the main body of the report. We arrive at a conclusion, and we guide the reader to a series of recommendations. A good report is like a well told joke, it funnels the reader down to the punch line: - Introduction - Sets the scene - Findings - Gives the detail - Conclusions - Lands the punch line We draw the reader down the narrowing funnel to our logical conclusions. If you are just starting your article writing career and want to save time, consider writing list type articles. These articles are very popular online and can be written rather quickly. I’m sure you have seen many list type articles. Their titles usually start out with: 10 Ways To, 7 Techniques For, or 5 Steps To. This type of article can be written very quickly. If you are just starting to write, I recommend that you use this technique. Your article should contain between 300 and 500 words. Although this may sound like a lot, you will be surprised at how quickly the number of words begins add up. Begin your first paragraph by informing the reader of a problem that you are going to solve. In paragraph 2, tell the reader how they will benefit by using the steps you list below. In the following paragraphs, list your solutions. You can number them if you like but it is not necessary. Each solution should be listed in its own paragraph. If possible, include a couple of sentences on each item. Your concluding paragraph should repeat how the steps above will solve the problem and how the reader’s life will improve by implementing those steps. Make sure you add an author’s resource box that includes links to your website or products. If you are just beginning to write, this type of article should reduce the time required from an hour to 20 minutes or so. And like I said, keep at it. Wandering Star, J.M.G. LeClezio, 2004, ISBN 1931896119 Written by the winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the story of two young women who meet by chance in the turmoil of the Middle East. During World War II, Esther is a Jewish girl living in a small town somewhere in southeastern France. The residents have an uneasy relationship with the Italian troops occupying the town, but they get along. When the Italians surrender and leave the town, the Jews know that the Germans will send them on a one-way trip to a concentration camp. So Esther, and her mother, Elizabeth, and the other Jews in town undertake a harrowing journey on foot through the mountains, to reach the coast, and passage to Jerusalem. Esther constantly worries that her father, who joined the resistance, will never be able to find them again. After many days journey, carrying whatever they can, they reach the coast, and board a boat heading for Israel. The ship is halted by the authorities, and sent back to France, where the Jews are held for a time, before actually reaching Jerusalem. There, Esther meets a young Palestinian girl named Nejma, a refugee because of the fighting. In the early days of their time in the camp, the Palestinians treat it like some sort of temporary setback; after a few days, weeks at the most, they’ll be able to return home. The women gather at the local well and gossip like they are already back home. As reality sets in, and they begin to realize that they aren’t leaving anytime soon (if ever), hope turns into despair and the feeling that they have been abandoned by the rest of the world. The only thing the Palestinians have to look forward to is the occasional arrival of the UN aid truck. Life becomes a daily struggle for survival. At the end, Nejma leaves the camp with Saadi, a black man who loves her, and wants to take her back to his homeland. As one person’s wanderings end, those of another person are just getting underway. Told in first person by both young women, this is a quiet novel, but it’s also a beautifully written novel. So this is what Nobel-caliber fiction is like. I will make sure to look for more of it. Very few successful authors ever published their first draft of their first work. Nearly all had to expend considerable effort to improve their craft. Here are some ways to prepare for that moment of publication. These tips also help keep you on your toes after publication for better and better writing results as your career develops. 1) Read, read, read in your field. You can never read too much when you’re trying to excel as a writer. Reading in your field helps you develop a discerning eye. You need this discerning eye for when you step back and look at your own work. 2) Cultivate role models. Know who the top-selling authors are in your field. Find out more about them. How did they get to where they are? Do searches in the Internet (available in most libraries-ask your librarian how to use a search engine) for information about particular authors whose careers you admire. Let your role models inspire rather than daunt you. There is no competition, only inspiration, potential teachers and opportunities for cooperation. That author you envy this year may be writing a blurb for your first novel next year. 3) Research your markets. If you want to publish in periodicals, whether literary fiction, journalistic writing, or anything else, realize publication standards serve a purpose other than to frustrate new authors. 4) Take classes. Many cities offer writing classes through community colleges or local writing groups. Online writing classes are popping up everywhere. If possible, choose a writing teacher who has published in a field you’d like to enter. Even better, find someone you already consider a mentor. Not every published author has what it takes to offer beginning writers what they need, but many do. 5) Join or start a writer’s group in your area. We teach best what we most need to learn. There is no better way to improve your own writing than to help others with theirs. 6) Find a writing buddy with whom to check in on a regular basis. The two of you can be each others’ inspiration, accountability market, guidepost and reality check. Having structure and someone to check in with may help you look forward to your otherwise lonely writing sessions. 7) Play with changing voices. Copy other writers you admire. How does that feel? Pretend you suddenly got an injection of creativity serum or I.Q. booster, then write like mad for ten minutes. What happens to the quality of your words? Is this a possible new direction for you? As creative and intelligent beings, we have so much more within us than we could ever dream. 8) Accept the reality of rewriting. Unlike other professions who get to rest on their milestones, for writers, a completed manuscript often represents a beginning. The best writing comes after lots of rewriting, even for seasoned authors. You needn’t throw any of it away, but not every sentence belongs in every work. Save the scraps, but don’t get attached to where they go, or the integrity of your project will suffer. 9) Get clear on what you want out of getting published. Many writers move forward without knowing where they want to wind up. As a teacher once told me, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The answer to what you want out of getting published will help you determine the best route to take. And in publishing, those routes are many and varied. You can use our Twenty Questions as a self-help guide. 10) If what you want is to get published in the least amount of time, considering hiring a ghostwriter. An extremely common but rarely discussed practice, many successful authors talk to ghostwriters, who put their skills to work on an author’s behalf.
