pithy prose the wit wisdom of friedrich schiller

Friday, August 31st, 2007

by Philip Yaffe Part 15 of an occasional series I am a collector of quotations. I have been ever since I learned how to write, I mean professionally, not in primary school. I am particularly fond of what I like to call “pithy prose”. These short quotations can cover an unlimited variety of subjects: love, religion, politics, human nature, etc. What unites them is their ability to say more in one or two sentences than could be expressed in a thousand-word treatise. It’s like being able to pour a liter of liquid into a half-liter bottle. They are superb examples of Mark Twain’s famous dictum, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.” In principle, all writers and public speakers are capable of producing pithy prose, but clearly some are better at it than others. Any collection of pithy prose must necessarily be biased in terms of what it includes and excludes. I make no apologies for my selections, only for the hundreds of other meritorious quotations I had to leave out. No one will agree with all these quotations; this was not their intention. You may even find some of them repugnant or outrageous. This was their intention. We seldom learn anything of value from what we already agree with. Only those ideas that grate on our nerves can open our minds. As with oysters, irritation can produce pearls. So if anything you are about to read annoys or shocks you, try to think clearly and dispassionately about what it is saying. You will either be confirmed in your current belief or shaken into re-examining it. Either way, you win! This article is part of an occasional series. In each article, I will be offering more amusing, educating, and exasperating quotations to your judgment. But just to be certain that we agree on what we are talking about, here it is in a nutshell. Pithy Prose: A quotation where at first you may not be quite certain what it means. But when you become certain, you become equally certain that it couldn’t have been said better any other way. In short, big ideas in small packages. If you have a better definition of pithy prose, please contact me. I would love to hear it. Who Is Friedrich Schiller? sulumits retsambew part iv the warrior

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

In the morning they were on their way before the sun began to peak from behind the distant mountains, another hot day as the temperature was already soaring. Sulumits realized that his companion was a little weak and offered to extend their stay to rest for another day. Ahmer would not consider delaying as staying where they were and letting what little food and drink they had dwindle was not smart. Hours later as the sun was showing all its’ might directly above them, Sulumits noticed horsemen approaching fast from the rear. The cloud of dust left a trail behind them as if a storm was chasing closely behind. It was obvious to Sulumits and Ahmer that the three riders and five horses were headed straight to them. As the horses came to a quick stop only feet away, the dust engulfed everyone and Ahmer began to choke. The large man sat upon a jet black horse pointed at them with his sword as he demanded “Who are you and where is it you go?” Ahmer quickly moved in front of Sulumits as he spoke, “I am Ahmer from where the sun rises. My young lad and I are heading west to the kingdom of Paphos looking for a place to rest our heads and sell these sheep skins before returning to where we came.” The man moved his horse forward toward Ahmer then turned sharply to the right and with his foot out of the saddle, he threw it viciously into Ahmer’s chest knocking him backward into Sulumits as both went to the ground. “You will load all these skins on the back of the horse or you will be lying in your own blood!” the man shouted as his men remained still and quiet. He pointed his sword at Sulumits and shouted “NOW!” Sulumits has never felt such anger, to see Ahmer rasping for his breath unable to move. He was in such a bad condition that Sulumits was afraid that his older friend would not survive. He was determined to save Ahmer. He moved slowly as he placed Ahmer’s head onto the ground and moved the hair out of his face with care. Then, like a wild possessed man and as quick as the wind, he withdrew his knife and leaped up toward the black horse and instantaneously pushing it to the nearest point he can reach, the man stomach, catching him and the others by surprise. As the knife penetrated the man, his sword fell to the ground and Sulumits picked it up and swiftly brought it back to where it had just came, ending the man’s life. A second man on his horse approached and Sulumits with a crazy look in his eyes swung and severed the mans leg before he fell to the ground. When Sulumits turned to face the third rider, all he could see was the cloud of dust as sped back toward the direction he came. As the dust cleared, Sulumits Retsambew stood surrounded between the noisy four horses and suddenly everything was very quiet. The young boy remembered Ahmer and the fear for his friend paralyzed him as he searched for him. He found him much further away than he thought he could be. Ahmer was in the same place and position as he left him. He was breathing, but it was not a normal way to breath, or nothing similar to anything Sulumits has ever experienced. —- Read Sulumits retsambew Part-III Cleo is the owner of Cyprus marketing solutions Ltd. a Paphos based company providing proven internet marketing solutions specializing in Real estate and also works on SEO. why the best cover letter must accompany the best resume if you want the job

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

How important is the cover letter (letter of introduction) that accompanies your resume? It’s possible that you have the very best written resume in the world and be the very best candidate for the job, but if your cover letter is poorly written, you can pretty much throw your chances out the window. The cover letter is your first, and sometimes your only opportunity to grab an employer’s attention and let them know why your resume is worth reading. Remember

are tattoos a fad

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

I know a lot of you reading this might not have even given this any thought or you simple think that they are not a fad they are here to stay. But you honestly never know if they will ever come so taboo like they were once before. Yes, I will admit that society in general is a little more forgiving and more open to people having tattoos. But will it always be this way? I personally hope it will because I don’t want to be perceived as an outcast or lesser of a person because I have tattoos. One might wonder why tattoos have become so popular over the years. Is it because a lot of our favorite athletes, movie stars and other people we look up to have them. Or is it the TV shows like Miami Ink and LA Ink that gives us a peek into the world of a tattoo artist and what tattooing really does for people. These are questions that I often think about. Because to me it seems that tattoos have become a lot more popular in the past 5 to 7 years. Could this be because we as a society have become overly obsessed with celebrities and knowing everything about them, including getting tattoos so we can be just like them? Or have times just simply changed and tattoos have some how evolved into something that is a must have rather than a no no.

how to write a great resume for the canadian job market

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Many Canadian job seekers are only too aware that there is no easy trick to effective resume writing. Effective resume writing takes patience, research and attention to detail. Good language skills are also important to ensure proper grammar, sentence structure and spelling to ensure an error free resume. Most Canadian job seekers do not have the energy or the patience to sit and write their resume, the most important job document in their job search. When writing their resume, most people usually focus on the information that is important to them; rather that writing about what is important to the potential employer. Job seekers spend a lot of time describing their job responsibilities when writing their resumes, sometimes using jargon and terminology specific to their industries. Unfortunately this approach serves to weaken their ability to convey how their transferrable skills relates to the jobs or careers they are targeting. Writing A Great Resume That Maximizes Your Job Search Success The first step in writing your resume is to conduct a thorough personal skills assessment to identify the core competences that you have developed through your working experiences and academic studies. The next step in effective resume writing is to describe those skills using keywords that the employers will understand so no jargon and are relevant to the job you are targeting. To ensure maximum job search success, you must first develop an understanding of how to identify the skills an employer wants. To do that, you must first review the job description carefully. Most job descriptions are written with the most important qualifications and job responsibilities listed from most to least important. So you must review the posted job descriptions starting with the skills listed at the top to identify the skills that are most important to an employer and incorporate the ones you have into your resume and cover letter. sylvia brown psychic or scam

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Sylvia Brown is probably one of the most well known psychics in America. While she has many followers, she also has many critics. Sylvia Brown was born Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker in 1936 in Missouri. She has her own radio show and has appeared as a regular guest on the Montel Williams show and Larry King Live. Sylvia claims she first began having visions when she was five years old and that her grandmother was also psychic. She later on in 1974 started giving psychic readings and attracted attention. Currently her psychic readings for a 30 minute session cost $850.In one of her many books she claims to know what the environment in heaven is and describes it in specific detail. In 1986 she formed a church in California named the Society of Novus Spiritus. This church refers to itself as a Gnostic Christian church and follows the traditions of Christianity. It’s interesting to note that satellite churches have been created and these smaller churches receive no financial support from Novus. They are also required to send money to the headquarters and purchase all of their religious/spiritual books and materials from Novus. Another cause for concern over the integrity of Sylvia Browne, is the fact she has been indicted on charges of fraud and theft in California. Critics of Sylvia Browne note that her predictions or claims are founded on classic psychic reading techniques that anyone can learn. Furthermore, on numerous occasions Browne has made predictions in public that were later found to be incorrect. Sylvia Browne has some strong critics, Robert Lancaster is one skeptic who created the website stopsylviabrowne.com to challenge her claims. You can visit his site for more details and criticism. Even with all the critisism, Sylvia Browne continues to release new books. She still has a large fan base of supporters willing to give her money or buy her next book. In the end whether or not Sylvia Browne has psychic powers or not, one thing is certain, she knows how tell a good story that captures people’s attention and (maybe wallets).

how to write a law essay

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Law Essays require a certain style and format if they are to be written effectively. Be Clear As with most essays, it is critical to read and understand the question and be clear what you have been asked. This may sound obvious but all too often essays are given low marks because the question is not actually answered. Identify Subject Matter The first thing is to clarify the subject matter so that you identify the area of law that is being addressed. Sometimes this will be obvious as when the question asks about the differences between an offer and an invitation to treat which will direct you towards the law of Contract. However, sometimes the question is more obscure and this requires more effort in determining what the subject matter is and might involve looking at more than one area of the law. If a question asks about the terror laws, then this may well span human rights and constitutional law too. Identify the Approach This is absolutely vital when answering a question. Often the essay will ask you to evaluate something; reflect on something; write a critique; discuss a particular statement; reflect on a judge’s particular statement in a case, or discuss the impact of a case on an area of law. If a question asks you to compare more than one thing, then you must identify the similarities and differences between them, and ideally reach a conclusion as to which one you think is preferable. If a question asks you to discuss something then you must study and comment on it from all viewpoints, and reach your own conclusion. Prepare the Structure The structure of the essay is extremely important. If an essay exceeds 10,000 words, a contents page and chapter headings should be included and, even in shorter essays, it might be appropriate to set out chapter headings. Chapters are relevant where the answer straddles a wide area of law and addresses several areas. Chapters help focus both the writer and the reader on what is being discussed and maintain focus. One major criticism of law essays is that they drift from the main topic and angle that they are meant to address, and the thread and point are lost. Another criticism is that the writer tends to just list the legislation and discuss the topic without containing any incisive opinions of the writer. An introduction and conclusion should be included. Sources Make sure that your sources are current; this is vital because quite often questions are written which are impacted by recent changes or even proposed changes in the law. So a question on Control Orders should be looked at in the light of the proposed increase in detention periods and the impact on human rights. Citation The correct referencing should be used consistently throughout. It is vital to give credit when quoting someone else, otherwise the essay may be plagiarised. It is never acceptable to cut and paste from the internet. Neither should you copy directly from a book unless you give the appropriate credit. Copying huge sections, even if credit is given, will not be looked upon favourably. The examiner will be looking for the writer’s comments and own views and opinions, based on a sound interpretation of the law and thorough research. The examiner will be looking to see that the writer has researched several resources. References to case law must be relevant and illustrative. Remember to include a full bibliography. If you require more information and assistance please visit: .law-essay.com It could be the best move you ever make in achieving your qualification.

making easy cash creating articles and article marketing

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Making easy cash creating articles by article marketing is the perfect way to make money online. Writing articles online is the perfect way to supplement an income if you have the spare time or just want to make a full time income writing for the internet. Article marketing is one of the most traditional ways to get traffic and make money writing online. In this tutorial, I will show you how to start making at least $50-$100 writing for article directories: Write informative and engaging articles- One of the biggest mistakes writers make when article marketing is that they use the cheap or easy way to producing articles. I can’t tell you the amount of times I have ran across an article that was so horrible, it only made me resent the writer and click the back button. I didn’t even take the time to look at their offer, because I knew the article was crap just to gain a backlink. It was clear this internet marketer was using an article spinner to spit out a bunch of useless junk. You don’t have to be the best writer in the world, but using common sense and writing informative articles can increase your click-through rate to your links. You will need to write at least 10-20 articles. Make them at least 500-900 words. Learn conversion rates- Conversion rates are the secret to your success. Know these figures; 100-200 clicks = 1-2 sales. This is for products that are under $50. If you want to make the most money, you might want to price your products at $49. Make sure your product is worth that much or else set the price correctly with the value. Article marketing is nothing more than a numbers game. The more articles you write, the more clicks you will get to your articles. So, even with the worse articles with no SEO incoporated in them, you should get at least 1-2 clicks. If you write 20 quick articles and send them to 4 article directories, you will get at least 160 clicks. Write an article relating to any product you are promoting. Then, you will need to choose 2 article directories to submit your articles to. If you send these articles to too many article directories, then Google will automatically flag the content as duplicate content and de-index it from the search engines. This will stop the whole point of making money with your articles. Now, submit those 20 articles to two article directories that publish and review articles at the same time. I would suggest thefreelibrary.com and Articlebase.com. They both have pretty high page ranks and you can fair well with these article sites. Your articles will also get a pretty good ranking. You could use low competition keywords in the article’s title and resource tags. When you pick a product to promote, make sure it is from a well trusted affiliate program. I would rather promote my own products, as I know I would get paid instantly. It can take a long time to get paid from affiliate programs. For most, it can take over a month just to get a paycheck. how to choose a freelance writer for your online business

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

With content reigning king over the internet, choosing the right freelance writer is important to building your online business throne. Akin to the HR decisions you make for your in-house employees, not all freelance writers are created equal. Finding the freelance writer that has synergies with your business is important to ensure that your content fully maximizes your company’s revenue, branding, and exposure potential. Evaluate your specific content needs You should first consider two elements pertaining to your content before you begin your search for a freelance writer: • Content Goals: What is the ultimate goal of the content you would like the writer to develop? Would you like sales copy that will convert each visitor into a paying customer? Or, would you like informative articles that will build your reputation of expertise? Are you seeking link-bait articles that will generate buzz in the social networks? Each type of content goal will require a different style and focus of writing, and it is important that you firmly establish your goals in order to find the best content writer for your project. • Branding Tone: The value of branding cannot be underestimated, especially online where information flows with full transparency. If your branding portrays a fresh, hip style, then you want to ensure that your content is in line with that strategy. On the other hand, if your positioning is based upon conservative professionalism, it requires a different type of style and voice for branding congruency. Important freelance writer elements to consider Once you have your content goals and branding tone in mind, then you are ready to begin selecting an appropriate freelance writer. As in most industries, freelance writers have specialties. Some may focus on editorial or travel writing, while others are specialized in SEO web content. There are a myriad of freelance writers from whom to choose, and the key is narrowing down which ones have writing expertise that fit your customized needs. • Writing Niche: If the purpose of your content is to promote and enhance your website, then it is important to select an article writer who understands the fine line between SEO and great writing. Although you can always hire a “SEO expert” to go into the content to make the necessary revisions, choosing a freelance writer who is versed in SEO will ensure that the content is not only great for the search bots, but also eloquent for the humans from the very beginning. • Copyright Considerations: Keep in mind that not all writers will release the copyright of the content to you. For many freelance writers, they keep the rights of the content, and you are limited in the avenues and number of times you can publish the article. If you would like to keep the copyright of your content (which is a smart business move), then you should find an article writer who will automatically give you the rights to the content written on your behalf. • Non-Disclosure Agreements: A large portion of freelance writers will require that their name is credited with the development of their articles, as this is standard practice in the journalism and editorial fields. However, if you would like to publish the articles under your name
