choosing a dissertation topic

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Although the subject or topic of your dissertation will need to be related to the themes and issues covered in your ‘Advanced Topics’ course(s), this is an opportunity to identify and explore your own areas of interest. Generally speaking, the more narrowly focused your dissertation subjects will, the better result you get. Of course, you have to locate your particular study within a broader anthropological debate. As well as considering your personal enthusiasms, it is also important that you design your project with an awareness of the constraints that you face. Questions you should therefore ask yourself include: • Will the topic sustain your interest over the months to come? • Is there an existing literature within which you can locate your work? • Is there sufficient material to provide the evidence that you are going to need. • Is the topic one that you can research with the time and resources available? • Do you have the time and opportunity for empirical work? Always remember the following: •A dissertation topic does not need to be a totally new, groundbreaking, re-write the textbooks revelation. Studying an old dissertation subject in a new way, from a different perspective, can be a new contribution. •The topic chosen must be appropriate to your degree. •Be sure your chosen topic addresses a real problem or question. •The chosen dissertation topic must be appropriate for the subjects you have available to work with. •Select a topic narrow enough to be manageable, with a study that can be done in the time allotted. •It must be of genuine interest to you! If not, it will be hard for you to stay motivated over time. •Ideally, your topic should be of interest to your advisor. publishing made easy tips on how to get your manuscript published

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Publishing is an extremely competitive business. There are three main ways to go about getting your manuscript published; through an agent, directly through a publishing company, or by taking the increasingly popular self-publishing option. The best way to improve your chances of getting your book published by a traditional publisher is to find an agent who will ‘take you under their wing’ and add you to their list of clients. Publishing companies very rarely read or pay any attention to unsolicited manuscripts (i.e. a manuscript submitted by an author NOT by an agent). Therefore, you are in a much more likely to get your manuscript published if you have an agent. Unfortunately, getting an agent to agree to take you on as a client is almost as hard as it is to get a publisher to read your work. Agents give your work approximately 20 seconds of time before making a decision to either pursue you or reject you.., and 90-99% get rejected. It is tough! So getting an agent… - There are hundreds of Literary Agents in the UK. You need to target those agencies that handle the kind of writing that you do. So, get a copy of the ‘Writers Market UK 2008’, or the ‘Writers and Artists Yearbook 2008’. These list literary agents, telling you what genre of writing each agency deals with. - You can contact the Association of Author’s Agents (.agentsassoc.co.uk) or the Society of Authors (.societyofauthors.net) who should be able to point you in the right direction, and provide a list of suggested agencies that would suit your novel. - Call or email the appropriate agencies to enquire about their procedure for submitting manuscripts. If you don’t follow procedure you will automatically be rejected. - Write a well-written, succinct letter, briefly outlining your work and include a synopsis, together with three polished chapters and a brief CV. Make sure each letter is tailored to each individual agency

the abcs of better writing avoidance of clichs banishment of trite words creative expression

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Writing is an art; there’s no doubt about that. It’s a skill that often only comes through years of practice. Yet why is it children often come up with the most creative, inventive stories? Because they haven’t had clichés yammered into their brains for years and years… because they describe things in their own way, on their own terms, in words that make sense to them… and because they haven’t had it pounded into their skulls that they can’t write. Following are three simple rules to follow, to keep your writing fresh, creative and innovative. First rule: Strike the word very from your vocabulary. It’s quite possibly the weakest word in the entire English language. It’s the literary equivalent of adding sand to your tea. It offers zero in the way of nutritive value and even less in the way of flavor. There are so many other words that are more deserving of usage than this trite, flat, nondescript literary leftover. Try out a few other less-common adverbs. Go ahead. Give exceptionally a whirl. Or how about remarkably, tremendously or phenomenally? Don’t be afraid to use new words or phrases. Second rule: Avoid clichés. Now, I could have said, “Avoid clichés like the plague,” but that would have been what you would have expected. When you run across a cliché in your writing, pluck it out of there like a tick from your dog’s neck. Flush it down the toilet if you wish, or simply crush it beneath your heel. I don’t much care how you do it; just get rid of it. Now that you’ve got a nice little cavity in your page, rummage through your imagination file cabinet for a fresher phrase. Instead of saying, “as rough as sandpaper,” take a moment to think about other things that are rough, things that are less commonly referred to: your grandmother’s elbows… the skin on the bottoms of a beach lifeguard’s feet… a gravel driveway… even badly poured concrete. Let your creative side run wild… as wild as the blueberries your Aunt Meg makes into jam every summer. Yes, that wild! Fashion a fresh simile (a comparison using the words like or as) and watch your words take flight. Third rule: Steer clear of the ordinary. When there’s a more creative way to say something, use it! This goes along with the “Avoid clichés” directive. For instance, instead of calling rush hour in Boston “bumper-to-bumper mayhem,” which would be an ordinary way to describe the twice-daily madness, a writer friend of mine wrote, “Cars beeped and swerved along Storrow Drive.” A beautiful bit of prose. Simple. Fresh. Creative. Keep these three rules in mind as you begin your next writing project and your words will practically get up and dance off the page. what every author of childrens books should know top tips for success

When writing a manuscript for a story for toddlers it is important to take a moment to try and think like a child. Try to understand from their perspective the type of story they would want to hear and the type of book that would capture their imagination. A toddler needs a story that will engage them and hold their interest. This can be achieved through various methods including the use of fun or rhythmical language or by writing about something that they can relate to. Some of the more successful books for toddlers are written around subjects that form a part of a toddler’s daily routine, i.e. potty training, taking a bath, getting dressed etc. and this can be a good place to start when considering the type of story you wish to write. Another obvious way of producing a winning book is through the use of bright and interesting illustrations or through quirky pages, which involve touching different textures or lifting flaps etc. and these are all things that should be considered once your story has taken shape. Although writing a story for a toddler seems like it should be a simple task it still requires you to work through the same processes as if you were writing any other story. You need to establish a plot and story line that the child can follow with ease. You also need to include characters that toddlers can relate to or understand, e.g. family members or animals. The story must always finish with a happy ending and if possible should have an underlying positive message that you would wish a child to reflect in their own behaviour. For example, being kind to others or telling the truth. Although it is good to include such social messages do not approach them from a sinister perspective. It is not necessary to dwell on the dire consequences of not telling the truth as the story must be uplifting and fun. Toddlers are very honest critics and they know the type of stories and books that they like, and indeed that they will return to time and time again. So once you have written your story why not let a knowledgeable critic give their opinion

Sword Masters, Selina Rosen, 2008, ISBN 9781896944654 Tarius, of the land of Kartik, travels to the neighboring land of Jethrik to join their swordmaster academy. Both his parents were killed by the Amalites, and Jethrik is currently at war with the Amalites, so Tarius wants to kill Amalites. He quickly distinguishes himself as an expert with the sword, and is noticed by Darian, the headmaster, and by King Persius. Tarius also attracts the notice of Jena, Darian’s daughter, who only has eyes for Tarius. He tries everything possible to push her away, to no avail. Tarius is hiding a huge secret, which will not stay secret forever; Tarius is a woman. Jethrik is a land of rigidly defined gender roles; among them is the absolute prohibition on women wielding steel. Tarius leads several successful campaigns against the Amalites. Persius gets the Amalites to leave Jethrik land, and agree to a peace treaty (over Tarius’ strong objections). Beings like the Amalites, with a philosophy of Convert or Die, will not be bound by a piece of paper; they will be back. Eventually, Tarius’ secret is revealed, and, as expected, Persius, Darian and Jena hit the roof. Tarius is to be immediately executed, by being dragged throughout the kingdom, tied to the back of a horse. She is helped by friends, nursed back to health, and heads home back to Kartik. Jena is forced to marry Tragon, a man she despises. After her repeated refusal to let him into her bed, Tragon unintentionally kills her unborn child, and Jena kills Tragon. For a wife to kill her husband is a major offense, so Jena is convinced that fleeing to Kartik, to see if Tarius will take her back, is a really good idea. This is an excellent piece of writing. It’s a sword and sorcery novel with an emphasis more on the “sword” than the “sorcery.” The reader will not be disappointed. Post-it notes were developed by chance. Wikipedia.com outlines the history of the post-it note: “In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver a scientist at 3M in the United States, with the help of Jesse Kops, a fellow scientist, accidentally developed a “low-tack”, reusable pressure sensitive adhesive. For five years, Silver promoted his invention within 3M, both informally and through seminars, but without much success. In 1974, a colleague of his, Art Fry, who had attended one of Silver’s seminars, came up with the idea of using the adhesive to anchor his bookmark in his hymnbook. Fry then developed the idea by taking advantage of 3M’s officially sanctioned “permitted bottlegging policy. 3M launched the product in 1977, but it failed as consumers had not tried the product[3]. A year later 3M issued free samples to residents of Boise. Idaho. United States,. 90% of people who tried them said that they would buy the product. By 1980 the product was being sold nationwide in the US;[3] a year later Post-its were launched inCanada and Europe. In 2003, the company came out with Post-it Super Sticky notes, with a stronger glue that adheres better to vertical and non-smooth surfaces”. The rest is history. At Spacelocker we don’t have any famous scientist inventors, just a group of funsters who came up with a cool idea. Like post-it notes, our stickies are easy to use and a great way to send a quick note or reminder. When you are in your locker, go to either your address book or you’re your friend’s locker page. In the address book, first highlight their name, and then click on the stickies icon at the top of the address book window. A stickies window will open. Type your note on the sticky and click post. On your friend’s locker page, click on the stickies icon. Again a stickies window will open. Type your note on the sticky and click post. Either way you’re sticky will be posted to the shelves in your frien’s locker and they will get an email that you sent them a sticky. How cool is that! Spacelocker.com

research paper writing two different approaches

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

Writing a research paper is significantly different from creating a personal essay. This is due to the extensive research the author must engage in to complete these papers. Research papers serve as the writer’s ideas and opinions intertwined with facts and theories from credible sources. Analytical Approach to Research Papers Analytical research papers require the writer to have thoroughly explored the topic being covered. The goal is to provide expert knowledge in a way that is broken down into the writer’s own words. With an analytical approach to writing, the writer answers the research question objectively by coming into the project with no pre-conceived opinions about the subject. In an analytical research paper, you do research to become an expert on a topic so that you can restructure and present the parts of the topic from your own perspective. In this brand of research paper, therefore, you go into the researching stage with a specific topic about which you have not made any kind of conclusions. Often you will hear this called your research question. Your task is to survey the information and views already out there–both before and once you become familiar with the topic. That will require critical thinking and reading, plus evaluation of the resources you handle. By the end of the paper you will be able to contribute your own thoughts to the academic discussion by drawing some conclusions about the topic you have just analyzed. Your task is to survey the information and views already out there–both before and once you become familiar with the topic. That will require critical thinking and reading, plus evaluation of the resources. You can get help from the many research paper writing services present there. The Argumentative Approach to Research Papers Argumentative research papers are also known as persuasive papers. Besides presenting ideas which have undergone much critical thinking, the writer takes one side of an argument and uses it to form a thesis. The thesis is essentially a statement proposing one side of an argument that the writer feels should be taken into consideration. A series of generalizations or propositions, supported by evidence or reasoning and connected in a logical manner, that lead to a justified conclusion. You must sustain your argument by giving evidence and reasons. In direct contrast to the analytical paper, your approach here is to take a stand on an issue and use evidence to back-up your stance, not to explore or flesh out an unresolved topic. We have included an entire step just on this aspect of the research paper writing process, but it’s probably worth your while now to know that this stance, this debatable statement or interpretation is known as your thesis. In direct contrast to the analytical paper, your approach here is to take a stand on an issue and use evidence to back-up your stance, not to explore or flesh out an unresolved topic. Take research paper help from your professor or fellow students or you may ask from the senior students that already have done there research paper project. The argumentative research paper is an attempt to convince your readers of the validity of a certain view you hold of a subject, while the analytical research paper is an attempt to use your research to give an objective snapshot of what is known about the subject. dissertation samples how to contact

Several little details can ruin everything, trust me, and so pay attention. First of all, when looking at a dissertation example of a Title, for example, make sure it corresponds to the writing style you are obliged to obey. Also, make sure that even if they match, the information is up-to-date. Another group of students usually struggles with a long list of guidelines as to formatting a Title Page, Lists of tables and Graphs, Bibliography or Appendices. I usually divide such people into two groups. For some reason many students prefer to look online for dissertation examples. These people simply want a practical embodiment of proposed steps and want to look at a written page. The first group of restless seekers secretly believes that somewhere in the boundless waters of Internet there lies the example of the dissertation, which coincidentally matches their topic and gives out the main points of writing. There are only a few things I would like to advise to the last group. There is nothing more I can urge these people except stop wasting their time. Don’t let a misunderstanding creep onto the pages of your paper just because the dissertation example is not new enough. Well, this is the usual occasion and many students have successfully managed their dissertation writing with the help of such dissertation examples. Style guide manuals have a tendency to be adjusted every few years. For Site Link:- .academic-writing.net/dissertations.htm
