As He entered adolescence, He was married to Gujri Ji, the daughter of Lal Chand Khatri. He left the house after His father’s departure and shifted to Baba Bakala, along with His mother and wife. There in His house, He got constructed a Bhoraa, a small room in His basement, and sat there for hours thinking of God, engrossed deeply in meditation. He was so self absorbed that people thought He had gone mad and made fun of Him; but He never paid any attention or entertained even a single thought of hatred against these people. TEG BAHADUR JI BECOMES THE GURU When Bala Pritam, Sri Guru Harkrishan Ji, was leaving this planet He awarded the Guruship to Teg Bahadur Ji. Though He did not disclose His name but only location, He is considered to be Guru Teg Bahadur since Chetar Sudi 14, Sammat 1721 Bikrami when Harkrishan Ji announced that next Guru is at Baba Bakala. Sangat rushed to Baba Bakala in large numbers to meet their next Guru; but they were surprised to find not one but 22 people claiming to be the Guru. Each one of them was trying to spread the word through hired agents that he was the real Guru. The Sikhs waited patiently for the true Guru to reveal Himself and finally that day came. Bhai Makhan Shah Lubhana, a merchant, had been bringing a ship full of goods from distant lands. Unfortunately, the ship was caught in a storm and fears of its sinking began to spring up. One of the Sikhs advised Makhan, “If you want to save your ship, just think of Nanak’s seat and prey to it.” He concentrated on Guru’s feet and prayed, “My Lord ! Save my ship and I shall offer five hundred gold coins in gratitude.” Miraculously, his ship escaped the fury of the storm. He remembered his vow and rushed to Baba Bakala to give away the coins he had promised. He too faced the same ire as the other Sikhs, that of too many Gurus. He sat thinking under a tree outside the village and finally arrived at a solution. He decided to offer two gold coins to each of the Guru believing that the real Guru, the all aware, would Himself ask for the remaining 498. He went to each of the 22 men claiming to be the Guru but none of them asked for remaining coins. He was quite disappointed and walking in low spirits after the episode, asked people if there was anyone else claiming theGuruship. Then someone told him about Teg Bahadur, one of the sons of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, mentioning His detachness from worldly affairs. “If you want to meet Him, approach His mother Mata Nanki.” The discontent that had engulfed his heart began to soften a bit. He rushed to Mata Nanki and requested to see Teg Bahadur Ji. After some effort, Nanki Ji opened the door to the basement. Bhai Lubhana bowed to His feet and placed the two gold coins before Him. The Guru, the omnipresent and all aware, looked at him; a smile developing across His face, starting from the lips and slowly spreading to the entire face, and said, “You promise five hundred and surrender only two.” He uncovered His shoulder, removing a piece of cloth from it and pointing to it said, “Just look at the condition of my shoulder which pushed your ship out of the storm.” There really were fresh wounds on the Guru’s shoulder. Bhai Lubhana was ecstatic and placing all the five hundred coins in His feet, he kissed them a dozen times. Immediately after, he rushed to the roof top and started shouting, “Guru laado re ! Guru laado re !” implying that the Guru had been found. He narrated the entire episode to people, and they were convinced that after all the confusion they had found their real Guru.
